The Harrington Part Deux

Behold the magnificence of the mansion just sold by
the Shriners to their neighbor, St. Marys University.

*had a slideshow here which used to be on Slide.com before it
went offline. I still have the slideshow…just need to
reactivate it here.

  1. I sure hope that they have an appreciation for it and are not just “land banking” for future expansion. Their institution obviously does not understand the sacrosanct of Park Avenue. When they completed their recent expansion, they had an opportunity point to create infill that respected and blended with the old mansion architecture of Park Avenue. It could have been something Collegiate or Tudor. But instead they built something that could have been straight out of an office park in Eden Prairie. not to say that it is not nice – it’s just not appropriate considering the context and history of its location. It is overly apparent that however designed it and the institution that commissioned it did not have a reverence for the history of Park Avenue. Makes me a little uneasy therefore to think that they have acquired the Harrington mansion. I guess all we can do is hope for the best.

  2. Interesting, I especially appreciated the Western Arch article from 1904.
