Queen Anne and Classical Revivals – 2013

June 29, 2008. I attended a historic walking tour that began on the corner of 37th and Park Avenue. Ryan Knoke and Montana Scheff historians, life partners and historic house restorers led the tour.

I had driven down Park Avenue quickly passing interesting old houses that I never stopped to look at for years. Now, I was walking on Park Avenue with two guides who had intensively researched the architects, architecture and residents and passionately and enthusiastically shared what they knew. History became so alive and the stories were so compelling that…

It was an epiphany, a revelation. I haven’t missed a tour since.

I remember volunteering to help with registrations when the tours were written about in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The small supportive role I played felt vital and important. I had finally found work that made a real difference in the rescue and revitalization of historic buildings..

The slideshows are a tribute…and a way to relive the tours as often as they are viewed.

Now our guides, Park Avenue Historians Ryan Knoke and Montana Scheff are concluding one chapter of their lives and beginning a new one. The Park Avenue tours may continue or they may not.

Thank you Ryan Knoke and Montana Scheff for your work to restore two homes on Park Avenue, your advocacy for so many others, for recruiting devoted new owners, and acknowledging others who recognized the beauty of these homes, even those that were neglected, damaged, vacant and condemned to death by the City.

Your restoration of the Zeglin house is a victory, it’s beauty which you so masterfully restored brought back the elegance and pride to Park Avenue and compels all who see it to stop, get out of our cars, and experience the past and present history of this street and devote ourselves to its restoration and preservation.
